An Object is a single element of the real world represented in Geographic Information Systems.

An Object consists of:

  1. Geometry, which is the spatial representation. Different types of geometry are distinguished (point, line, and polygon).
  2. Attribute Values, a set of values characteristic for this Object.

Groups of Objects of the same class are collected in Layers.

In the example below:

An Object (a single measurement point) consists of:

  1. Geometry (i.e., its location at a specific point in space)
  2. Attribute Values, e.g.
    1. ID: 1,
    2. fid: 4747030,
    3. pna: 62-260,
    4. simc_nazwa: Pierzyska

Examples;

  1. The “Hydrants” layer likely consists of Objects: individual hydrants.
  2. The “National Parks” layer likely consists of 23 Objects: National Parks.
