There are thousands of coordinate systems. Each one is suitable for a specific application:
- Some are less accurate but cover the entire Earth,
- Others are very accurate, but only within a specific area.
For many years, there was a problem with the naming of coordinate systems, until the European Petroleum Survey Group introduced a classification and assigned a unique code to each system. For example, PUWG 1992 received the code 2180 and in most GIS systems it is identified as EPSG:2180.
