A popular raster file format is .tiff with spatial reference (meaning it is located in a specific position in space).

In simple terms: a scanned map can be in TIFF format, and after assigning it a georeference (sometimes called calibration), for example in QGIS, it becomes a GeoTIFF.

In the system, we encounter GeoTIFFs:

  1. when adding raster files to the GeoServer
  2. when loading DTM files into the DTM module
