Who can afford dedicated software nowadays?

I have the impression that the market in Poland has finally matured. I see decreasing interest in creating custom-made software dictated by the client, and growing interest in ready-to-use solutions that can be put to work almost immediately.

What is this due to?

➡️ Experience. The vast majority of potential clients have been through the trauma of custom software projects. They participated in creating requirements and observed what they actually received in return.
➡️ Money. Programming has become very expensive, and the flow of other people’s money (especially in public administration) is not as abundant as it used to be.
➡️ Time. Creating requirements, developing software, testing adaptations… After several months, we receive a prototype that still requires even more time to refine and perfect.
➡️ Responsibility. Clients realized that by commissioning custom software, they become its owner and creator, without having the education, knowledge, or experience for it.

Purchasing software is slowly becoming a process similar to buying a car. We visit showrooms, observe, ask questions, compare, and choose what suits us best. In return, we receive something that is well thought out, designed, tested, and for which the creator takes responsibility.

After all, no one goes to a dealership or workshop with their own requirements: the front like car X, the rear like Y, the interior like Z, and the gearbox designed by ourselves.

Dedicated software should be developed only where it is absolutely necessary:
➡️ in companies – where it supports know-how and builds a competitive advantage,
➡️ in public administration – where the processes are unique and non-repeatable.

Answering the question from the beginning of the text: very few people.

Among other reasons, this is why it’s worth taking an interest in Usemaps—a ready-made platform that has been developed for years and tested by many institutions.
