GIS is no longer an extravagant add-on or another separate \u201ethree-letter\u201d system. Increasingly, it is becoming the foundation of organizational operations. <\/p>\n
For years, GIS was \u201eimplemented\u201d to integrate data from other systems. It was mostly used for visualization and less often for analysis. Management often didn\u2019t know what GIS truly offered, and isolated \u201eGIS specialists\u201d didn\u2019t always understand the organization\u2019s real needs. As a result, few people actually used these solutions. <\/p>\n
Today, the situation is starting to reverse. GIS is increasingly becoming the base – the foundation on which other specialized systems operate. This applies to all organizations whose operations depend on spatial context, including areas such as:

A separate GIS department – or a single GIS specialist acting as a \u201emap helpdesk\u201d – is losing its purpose. It\u2019s like keeping data in Word tables, copying it into emails, sending it to someone who \u201eknows Excel,\u201d and then waiting for calculations and a response. A waste of time and money. <\/p>\n
Today, more and more forward-thinking organizations are transforming GIS teams from a service role into:
\n\ud83d\udd35 system administrators for the platform on which the entire organization operates,
\ud83d\udd35 experts in data acquisition and evaluation,
\ud83d\udd35 key participants\u2014sometimes even at the executive level – in shaping and monitoring processes.<\/p>\n
What does this look like in practice?<\/p>\n
A large industrial plant in heavy industry. Until recently, maps – often paper-based – were stored in the basement. There was a \u201eDigital Map\u201d department that\u2026 prepared maps for other departments. The task queue was long, as was the list of problems caused by this approach. Not to mention the costs – staff time, plotters, and software. <\/p>\n
Today, the same department manages the system. Employees have online access to the information they need:
\n\u27a1\ufe0f from an excavator operator who checks infrastructure depth at the excavation site on a tablet,
\u27a1\ufe0f through the asset management department handling leasing, rentals, and taxes,
\u27a1\ufe0f to department directors who coordinate investments fully digitally. <\/p>\n
